SEO vs AI Search: What’s the Difference?

SEO is about ranking your website in search results so people click through to you. AI search optimisation, often called GEO, is about getting your business mentioned and cited in the answers that tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews write. They share the same foundations, so most businesses need both rather than choosing one.

What Is SEO?

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work that gets your pages ranking on Google for the searches your customers make. Success looks like a high position, a click and a visit to your website. If you want the full explanation, read what is SEO?

What Is AI Search?

AI search is when someone gets an answer written by an AI tool instead of, or as well as, a list of links. That includes:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which appear inside Google itself
  • ChatGPT, which can search the web and recommend businesses
  • Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, which do the same with their own sources

Success here looks different. It means your business being named, quoted or linked as a source inside the answer, even if the person never clicks.

Where Do SEO and AI Search Overlap?

More than most people think. AI tools pull from websites they can crawl and trust, which are usually the same sites that rank well. Studies of AI Overview citations have found that most cited passages come from near the top of the page, and that clear, self-contained answers are picked up more often. Both of those are simply good SEO writing.

The overlap includes:

  • a technically sound site that loads quickly and can be crawled
  • pages that answer real questions clearly and in detail
  • links and mentions from reputable websites
  • reviews and consistent business details across the web

What Does AI Search Need That SEO Doesn’t?

A few things matter more for AI than for traditional rankings:

  1. Answer-first writing. Put the direct answer in the first two or three sentences of a page or section, then explain.
  2. Mentions, not just links. AI tools notice when your brand is talked about on trusted sites, even without a link.
  3. Facts AI can repeat. Prices, timescales, comparisons and specific numbers are easier to quote than general claims.
  4. Tracking a different metric. Rankings won’t tell you whether ChatGPT recommends you. You have to check the answers themselves.

Which Should Your Business Focus On?

Start with SEO. Without a site that Google can read and trust, AI tools have very little to work with. Once the foundations are in place, add AI search work on top: answer-first content, mentions and tracking how often you are named.

For most local and service businesses, the right split is mostly SEO with a growing slice of AI search. That balance will keep shifting as more people search with AI.

SEO vs AI Search FAQs

Is AI search replacing SEO?

No. AI search builds on SEO. The pages AI tools quote are usually pages that already rank, so SEO is what gets you into AI answers in the first place.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It is another name for optimising your content so AI tools mention and cite it. Read our GEO guide for more.

Can I track traffic from AI search?

Partly. Visits from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini show up in Google Analytics as referrals. Our guide to tracking AI search traffic in GA4 shows how to set it up.

Do I need a different agency for AI search?

Not usually. AI search work overlaps so much with SEO that it makes sense to have one plan covering both.

[…] That doesn’t make SEO less important. AI tools build their answers from websites they can read and trust, so the same work that gets you ranking makes you more likely to be named in those answers. The difference is that clear, direct answers near the top of a page now matter even more, because that is where AI tools tend to pull their citations from.
